1 – Plan & Permit
Check local building codes, call utility services.
Mark out your wall location; use stakes and string for alignment.
2 – Prepare the Base
Dig a trench at least 6–8 in deep, slightly wider than your blocks.
Add 4 in of compacted crushed gravel or sand; level it carefully.
3 – First Course & Drainage
Lay the first row below grade for stability; level as you go.
Install perforated drainpipe behind the wall for drainage.
4 – Stack and Interlock Blocks
Install each course, offsetting seams like bricklaying.
Fill cores where required with gravel or concrete for added strength.
5 – Add Capstones
Secure top blocks with a bead of adhesive mortar.
Clean excess and level as you go.
6 – Backfill & Final Touches
Cover drainpipe with gravel, then backfill with soil.
Dress the wall top with gravel or soil and add plantings.
Drainage is non-negotiable: Without it, hydrostatic pressure can push the wall over Tim.
Recommended wall batter/inset: Walls should lean into the retained soil slightly to resist pressure.
Regular checks: Inspect for tilting, loose blocks, or clogged drains after heavy rains.
